04/14/09 - Army Pfc. Joseph V. Gallagher has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. He is the son of Marybeth and stepson of Jack Russell of W. Salisbury Drive, Wilmington, Del. Gallagher is a 2007 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
02/12/09 - Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Jeffrey M. Coale participated in the 56th Presidential Inauguration Jan. 20 as part of the largest ever contingent of National Guard members to serve in Washington, D.C. More than 7,000 Army and Air National Guard members from 31 states and territories provided the 2009 Presidential Inauguration with military working dogs, consequence management planning, and ceremonial, logistics, and medical support through the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee. National Guard members also assisted local authorities with crowd management, traffic control, and emergency services operations. The Armed Forces Inaugural Committee is established every four years by the Secretary of Defense as a joint service organization to coordinate military ceremonial participation and support inaugural events. Coale is an air transportation craftsman with the 166th Logistics Readiness Squadron based in New Castle, Del. The guard member has served in the military for 11 years. The technical sergeant graduated in 1991 from Mount Pleasant High School.
 
02/02/09 - Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Christopher M. Lazar participated in the 56th Presidential Inauguration Jan. 20 as part of the largest ever contingent of National Guard members to serve in Washington, D.C.  Lazar, a military police member with 19 years of military service, returned in the summer of 2008 to the 153rd Military Police Company, Delaware City, Del. after being deployed to an overseas forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He is the son of Andrew and Marie Lazar of Wyoming Ave., Wilmington.  The sergeant graduated in 1985 from Mount Pleasant High School.
 
06/12/08 - Air Force Airman Samantha J. Kelso has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of Irena Kelso of Blue Rock Road, Wilmington, Del. She is a 2007 graduate of Mount Pleasant Senior High School.
 
06/05/08 - Air Force Airman Jeremy M. Butterworth has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Donna Giorgi of Talley Road, Wilmington, Del. He is a 2006 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
05/04/07 - Army National Guard Pfc. Brandon S. Kelly has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Kelly earned distinction as an honor graduate of the course. He is the son of Glenn and Catherine Kelly of Governor Printz Blvd., Claymont, Del. He is a 2006 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
01/10/07 - Army National Guard Pvt. Andrew T. Murphy has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of Kevin Murphy and stepson of Barbara Dommell of Louise Road, New Castle, Del. He is a 2005 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
11/14/06 - Air Force Airman Holly N. Dean has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. She is the daughter of Thomas Dean (our MPHS music teacher) of Henderson Hill Road, Newark, Del., and niece of Alison Franz of Marsh Road, Wilmington, Del. She is a 2006 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
06/27/06 - Army Reserve Pvt. John C. Rickabaugh has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of John and Shirley Rickabaugh of Naamans Drive in Claymont. He is a 2002 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
06/09/06 - Army Reserve Pvt. Evan H. Sturtevant has graduated from the Light-Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic Advanced Individual Training (AIT) course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. The course is designed to train soldiers to perform maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair wheeled vehicles and related mechanical components, which include internal combustion engines and power trains, spark- and compression-ignition engines, wheel-hub assemblies, hydraulic-power brakes, suspension and steering systems, and learned to operate a wheeled vehicle crane, hoist, and winch assembly. Sturtevant is the son of Donna M. Baldwin of Middle Road, and grandson of Brittany Lee Smith of Grandview Ave., both of Wilmington, Del. He is a 2005 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
06/08/06 - Air Force Staff Sgt. Matthew C. Alexander has arrived for duty at Whiteman Air Force Base, Knob Noster, Mo. Alexander, a personnel journeyman with five years of military service, is assigned to the 509th Security Forces Squadron. He is the son of George and Nancy Alexander of Burns Road, Claymont, Del. His wife, Tanya, is the daughter of Thomas Houle of S. Florence Ave., Springfield, Mo., and Sherry Otterson of Brainerd, Minn.  He is a 1999 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
 
03/16/06 - Navy Seaman Apprentice Joshua L. Lipstein, son of Melinda M. Lenhardht of Marmora, N. J. and Donald F. Lipstein of Wilmington, Del., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Lipstein completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is 'Battle Stations'. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. He is a 2005 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
