Getting In: The College Application Process

 1.      Look over application thoroughly, note deadlines, and test requirements

2.      Be sure and give your teachers and counselor plenty of time to write a recommendation for you. (At least 2-3 weeks)

3.      IMPORTANT: For college applications that are due on January 1st, recommendation forms and the secondary report forms need to be in the hands of your counselor and/or teachers by November 30th. (Winter break starts on Dec. 20th, and counselors and teachers will be working over the winter break.)

4.      Check your transcript before your counselor mails it – make sure that everything is correct.

5.      Write a resume and give it to teachers and counselor so they know what you have been doing for the past 3-4 years.

6.      Look for scholarships and fill out financial aid forms, note deadlines.

7.      You may leave school to visit colleges, but be sure and get your assignments ahead of time.  Parents should call the attendance office at least a week before the visit.

8.      Senioritis – Watch out for this dreadful disease – tends to creep up after spring break!  Colleges want to see a final transcript and may rescind their offer of acceptance.

Look for books and articles on college and career planning in the MPHS library, the guidance office, public libraries, as well as local bookstores.
