How would a student go about seeing a counselor?
Counselors are available to be seen throughout the day.  Students should sign up by filling out one of the yellow forms located with the counseling secretary.  Students receive a pass to come to the guidance office usually in their homeroom.  Teachers have the final decision as to releasing a student from their class.  As soon as a student receives a pass and a time to leave, they should come directly to the counseling office.  Sometimes, circumstances will arise that take priority over a requested meeting.  If so, a student will be seen as soon as possible.

How does a student order a copy of their transcript?
Students may request a copy of their transcript from the counseling secretary.  Students may want to meet with their counselor to check their transcript before using it.  For official use, a counselor should check, stamp, date and endorse the transcript.

How can I reach my son or daughter's teacher via telephone or email?
Mount Pleasant High School has voicemail as well as email set up for each of our staff.  When you call the school number (762-7125), you should get a message.  If you know the teacher's extension, enter the number and leave a message (teacher extensions are typically their classroom # with a zero added to the end).  You can also email teachers, please refer to our Staff Directory.

Can my student make a schedule change?
Schedule changes are not made after the start of school, unless the student has been placed in a class which is inappropriate for their skill level.  Students are required to have a parent/teacher conference if they seek to change the skill level of any of their major courses.  Your counselor can give you more information on this process.

When should students register to take the SAT?
Students may obtain a registration booklet from the guidance office on the information rack.  Students may also register on-line at www.collegeboard.com.

Where does my son or daughter get a work permit?
Work permits are obtained after a student has accepted a job.  Work permits may be picked up in the guidance office and must be signed by any building secretary.

When should my son or daughter begin to obtain letters of recommendations for college applications?
Letters of recommendation are an important procedure in the college admission process.  It is never too early to start preparing for the college application process.  Adequate time should be given to this process.  Most counselors will request the student submit a resume along with a list of teachers knowledgeable about the student's academic/social history.  In addition to talking with teachers, counselors may meet with the student to discuss college or career goals.  It is very important for a student to give the counselor or teacher plenty of time to complete a recommendation.  We suggest that you ask for a letter of recommendation at  least three weeks in advance prior to the date that you would like it to be completed.  Please remember that first semester is a very busy time.  Your counselor could be writing many letters during the same time interval that you have requested.

Where can my son or daughter obtain college and scholarship information?
Our scholarship bulletin, updated frequently, is available online or in our career center.

Where can we find out more about financial aid programs?

How does a student register for classes in night school?
Night classes are held at James H. Groves Adult High School.  The classes are free to students who are enrolled in day school full time.  Students must be 16 years of age to participate in this program.  Enrollment is listed in the beginning of each semester with a counselor referral form..  Call 651-2709 (Wilmington) 683-3646 (Marshallton) and see your counselor for more information.

What is the NCAA Clearinghouse and when does a student need to register?
The NCAA Clearing House is for college-bound student athletes.  The NCAA is an association made up of 964 schools classified in three divisions.  The NCAA  Clearing House certifies athletes as eligible to participate in college sports.  The requirements for eligibility to participate differ for each division.  Your transcript, including test scores, proof of graduation and other academic information will be used to determine your eligibility to participate.
All students must initially register with the NCAA Clearinghouse on line at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net, an athletes eligibility as a "Qualifier" will then be determined.  A "Qualifier" can practice, compete and receive athletics scholarships as a college freshman.  Determination is based on a formula of core class grades and SAT scores.  See your counselor in the beginning of your senior year for more information and bring in your transcript request to the guidance secretary.  The most important note is to check with your counselor to make sure you are taking a core curriculum required by the NCAA.  You should register to take the SAT during your junior year.

What do I do if my son or daughter does poorly on the DSTP in the spring of their sophomore year?
