Class
of 2008: Mount
Pleasant High School graduated the third class of International
Baccalaureate students in June 2008. Fifty four students completed
either the IB Diploma or certificates and were awarded over $3.5 million
dollars in college scholarships. Students were accepted into some of the
most prestigious universities in the country—Harvard, Duke, Georgetown,
Gettysburg, Northwestern, Princeton, Swarthmore, USC, Penn, UVA,
Wellesley, and Washington University in St. Louis to name a few. |

Mount
Pleasant, the only public school in Delaware to offer the IB Programme,
has seen a steady increase in the number of students attracted to the
rigorous academic program. From a first class of 25, over 200 students
now participate in the Middle Years and Diploma Programmes at Mount
Pleasant High School in the Brandywine School District. |
|
|
“The
greatest reward for students is in the full Diploma Programme,”
according to Lynn Wright, IB Coordinator. Mount Pleasant graduates have
been awarded advanced placement and/or up to 26 college credits at a
broad spectrum of colleges and universities. This year, 10 students will
be attending college with full scholarships. A complete list of IB
student college and university admissions may be found on the
“University Admissions” link on the IB home page. “We are proud of the
accomplishments of all our IB students,” said Mrs. Wright. “They are
first-class ambassadors from Mount Pleasant to the rest of the world.” |

|
The
goal of the IB is to help create a better world by educating students.
The mission of the organization states “The International Baccalaureate
aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who
help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural
understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with
schools, governments and international organizations to develop
challenging programmes of international education and rigorous
assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to
become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that
other people, with their differences, can also be right.” |
|
|
The
IB Diploma Programme, the most challenging course of study available to
high school students in the world, offers students a comprehensive
liberal arts education that focuses on developing international
understanding, intellectual rigor, and high academic achievement.
Students study individual curriculum areas and transdisciplinary areas
across a broad range of subjects. Special emphasis is placed on learning
a second language, and students are provided opportunities for
individual and collaborative planning and research. |
|
|
Assessment
is a key component of the Diploma Programme. Students submit work to
both their classroom teachers as well as to outside examiners who are
trained by the International Baccalaureate Organizations (IBO) and come
from schools and universities around the world. Work is scored to common
standards, and is moderated by the IBO to assure that there is constancy
among examiners around the world. Students completing the Diploma
Programme are highly prepared for post-secondary work.

The idea of an
International
Baccalaureate was first conceived in the early 1960’s
by a group of teachers in the International School of Geneva. In
conjunction with other international and national schools in New York,
Copenhagen, Wales, Paris, Frankfurt, Tehran, and Montevideo, the
founders of the IB were most concerned with the ever-increasing emphasis
on education as the mere delivery of information. They wanted to
address the fragmentation of knowledge and the elimination of the
aesthetic and creative experience that was occurring in many curricula.
The International Baccalaureate Office was established in Geneva,
Switzerland, in 1965. An experimental project was launched in 1967 and
offered for use in 20 schools. Today, the Programme is being taught in
over 115 countries.
In 2004, Mount Pleasant High School became the first public school in
Delaware authorized to teach the IB Diploma Programme. Mount Pleasant is
now one of over 700 schools in North America and over 1,400 schools
worldwide that are part of the International Baccalaureate Organization. |
